Ashkelon approves a citywide plan for renewing older neighborhoods
On August 4, Ashkelon’s local planning and building committee approved a citywide urban-renewal plan and recommended moving it to the district committee for review. It focuses on older neighborhoods including Shimshon, Shapira and Givat Zion, as well as renewal areas in Afridar and Barnea; for residents, this is a planning framework, not approval for a specific construction project.
The decision was made on August 4. According to the municipality, the plan is intended to set Ashkelon’s urban-renewal policy for the coming years and create a shared planning framework for older neighborhoods and renewal areas already at different planning stages. The next step is review by the district planning and building committee.
The plan focuses on the city’s older southern neighborhoods — Shimshon, Shapira and Givat Zion. It also addresses renewal areas in Afridar and Barnea. The planning work examined building conditions, infrastructure, accessibility, public institutions, open spaces and the social characteristics of the areas.
The municipality presents renewal as a link between housing and the services that support it: public spaces, public institutions, transport, building reinforcement and protection, and different forms of construction. The published notice does not set construction dates for specific projects.
