Temporary fishing ban introduced off Ashkelon's coast
Israel's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has temporarily banned fishing in the sea zone off Ashkelon until Monday, 7 September. Residents and visitors may not fish in the specified area; the ministry separately states that fish sold to the public remains safe to eat.
The restriction took effect on 3 September and remains in force through 7 September 2026. It covers the area from Ashkelon's coastline in the north to the Gaza Strip boundary in the south, as well as the sea zone up to 10 km west of the coast.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the decision followed treatment in the sea related to algae growth near desalination facilities and consultations with the Ministry of Health. The measure remains in place while testing and monitoring are completed.
The Ashkelon Municipality asks fishers to observe the ban and not fish in the designated area until it is lifted. The restriction concerns fishing: the ministry says fish sold to the public is safe to eat.
