Sergeant David Hazut Killed in Combat in Southern Lebanon
On June 28, Ashkelon bid farewell to Sergeant David Hazut — a 21-year-old Golani Brigade soldier killed in a firefight with Hezbollah operatives in southern Lebanon. Hundreds of residents, family members, fellow soldiers, and city officials gathered at the funeral.
David Hazut was born and raised in Ashkelon. He was drafted into the IDF and assigned to the elite Golani infantry brigade, where he rose to the rank of sergeant. His commanders described him as a dependable soldier trusted with the most demanding assignments.
He was killed during a confrontation with a Hezbollah cell in southern Lebanon. The operation in which David took part was aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure close to the Israeli border.
The funeral was held at Ashkelon's municipal cemetery. Mayor Tomer Glam offered his condolences to the family and called David "a son of all Ashkelon." Senior officers from the IDF Southern Command also attended the ceremony.
The death of David Hazut is a painful reminder of the price paid by the city's families for the security of the country. The sergeant's name will be inscribed in Ashkelon's Book of Remembrance.
