Ashkelon leads Israel in net internal migration for 2024
Ashkelon Municipality reported on July 28 that the city ranked first in Israel for positive net internal migration in 2024. In the Interior Ministry’s open local-government report, Ashkelon’s figure is +2,984 residents: the difference between people who moved into the city and those who left it within Israel.
In its latest publication, Ashkelon Municipality cites Interior Ministry data for 2024. The internal-migration indicator does not show the city’s total population; it measures moves within Israel: the number of people who registered Ashkelon as their address minus the number of residents who left the city for other localities.
In the Interior Ministry’s “Local Government Status” dashboard, Ashkelon is listed with a net result of +2,984. The municipal notice says this places Ashkelon first among Israeli cities, ahead of Beit Shemesh and Ramat Gan.
For residents, the figure matters as a practical city-planning signal: population inflow affects planning for schools, transport demand, public spaces and municipal services. The figure does not include aliyah or natural growth; it reflects only registered internal moves.
The ministry’s report notes that population movements after the war are not always fully reflected in the data if people moved in practice but did not change their official address. The number should therefore be read as registered internal migration, not a complete count of all temporary relocations.
